The city is divided into two parts, the hilly side of Buda on the western bank and the flat plain of Pest on the eastern bank of the river Danube. These two parts of the city were once separate towns and were merged together with Ancient Buda (Obuda) only in 1873.

For new visitors, the Castle district is often the first stop on a tour of Budapest. This is a walled part of the city and contains the old town and the Royal Palace. The medieval streets of the old town are laid with cobbles and contain many museums, beautiful old, painted houses, churches and the famous Fisherman's Bastion.

Over the last 700 years the Royal Palace has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, the current building was mostly rebuilt in the 18th and early 20th centuries after the last war. This is the place to go if you're interested in art and the history of Hungary, with the National Gallery, National Library and Budapest History Museum housed inside the Palace.
